Dinosaur Gray died

Ta-Da!

The faux-zinc painting worked well on the headboard, took it from grandmotherly to acceptable by husband and wife alike.

The room is still in progress, but WOW what a difference primer and a few touches here and there make! My beloved Dinosaur Gray paint color from our last home is no longer being sold and I can’t find a swatch of it anywhere. So, alas, time to search for a new color. Thus the four swatches:

Most of our friends seem to be leaning to the far right, (in color swatch only). I think I’m good with that. Now to just find the time to paint… We’re so much happier with what little we’ve done with it already though. Man, priming over that awful mustard color made a world of difference. Then, adding the slate colored bedding with the newly painted headboard practically made us giddy. But what really put us over the top, was finding this beautiful mid-century modern dresser on Craigslist! It gave that half of the room the “someone lives here and cares” feel we’d been missing.

Beginning to look like an actual bedroom

See, doesn’t the dresser just top it off? Now, if I can just sort out how to blend Country French, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Mid-Century Modern all in one house without looking crazy, I’ll be all set.

The dogs, clearly, could care less about our victories.

Oh, by the way, we’ve entered Zeus’ fabulous photo in a contest on Facebook. Voting goes through May 13, 2012. Feel free to vote for the guy to encourage his dreams of modeling.

The Master Bedroom gets a little love

Alright we’re kicking these projects in the rear this year! I think I’ve determined we’re seasonal bloggers. During the winter months… I’m awful. I mean, really awful at keeping up. Ah well, today is a new day and I have a project to share.

It began with this

This 60′s French-styled gem is our new headboard, found at Whitly’s “seeing is believing” for $90. “Seeing is believing” is Whitly’s tag line, and trust me, it’s spot on. If you are from Indy or anywhere near Indy and you happen to love digging through stuff all for the potential of maybe finding something half way decent for an okay price, well, Whitly’s is for you.

It's like a hoarder just opened up their warehouse and said "have at it."

Back to the headboard. I’m FINALLY begining to have vision for our lackluster bedroom

Yes, easily the most neglected room in the house

Though I love the grandure of a gigantic four poster bed… it just isn’t reasonable for our room. It dwarfs our elongated space. We’ll be storing it for a future time of who-knows, maybe-we’ll-own-this place-one-day-and-need-it. So my vision for our room has developed into a simple, breathable space that would comfortably house the three pups and ourselves all in a beautiful way. Here’s a rough concept of what’s in my head.

I’m loving the glossy design on a matte wall and have loved this Dinosaur Gray color and various shades of light, faded green with a splash of plum. So some sort of design will some how come about on the wall with the bed itself. I’ve also been making various “N”s for our last name. I think that may wind up as a collaged design above the now-much-shorter bed. Some of the challenges in this design are 1. The husband doesn’t want it too girly 2. We have 3 dogs that refuse to stay off the bed. 3. I love plush beds.

That said, I ran across this tutorial for creating a zinc look to a peice of furniture. I really liked elements of it, but wanted to see if I could push it just a touch further. I like the concept of mixing a semi industrial (masculine touch) look with a breathable feminine touch (French eclectic/country). So, I’d like to do this faux zinc painting style on the headboard and incorporate it in a little. Perhaps to the boy dog beds too.

One of the very valuable lessons I’ve learned in the multitude of projects – both artistic and not so artistic – is that you should have a “tester” piece before ultimately diving in. This prevents great amounts of disappointment and or finances when the project just refuses to work out. So, I decided to zinc-ify a wooden “N” the husband found.

First I followed the original faux zinc painting tutorial. Up until the glazing. I used a light, dark and medium version of the metalic silver and wiped it on in various strengths to assist in getting a more multi-dimension look to the wood. I did hammer in a few carpet-tack nails to help the look of metal be more convincing.

Next I broke out the tube of silver. It’s not quite leafing and not quite paint. This stuff has some serious fumes so if you find yourself getting light-headed over a sharpie, you should probably open some windows or turn on a fan. I used a brush to move the silver over areas that just needed a little extra and really made it strong in some of the smaller triangles – again, keeping the look of metal in mind and trying to show strong areas of reflection vs shadow.

All in all, I don’t think it looks half bad. I may tone down the brightness for the headboard, and I think I’ll go a different route with the nails so it’s not too masculine looking, but I do think I’ll give it a go. Hopefully this weekend I’ll be able to show off a headboard.

Blankets are a must

Just a quick little post… I finally caught Bronte on camera doing what she does every day… every night… and every nap:

I’ll aim to create a brighter, clearer video of this one day… but she’s sneaky.

Fall Harvest, a recap

As we’re creeping up into winter, I’d like to return to the heart of Fall, to the 4th Annual Harvest Party. Josh upgraded his door-tables this year by giving them a more modern twist. He also filled in the door dips with concrete…good concept, still working on the execution. . . His finished table does look lovely and perhaps will lead to his creation of a new dining room table for us. Eh dear?

Setting up for the Fall Harvest party

Since the number of guests increased to about fifty people, we needed to break out all of our tables, chairs and have the other hosts bring their assortment as well. We also incorporated a few bails of hay – added fall decor & useful seating. Candelabras, candles, mini-pumpkins and white lights strewn about created the enchanting atmosphere we were going for – oh, and we mustn’t forget the candelabra from last year. It glowed too.

Looking down from the balcony

The meal itself, was, well, divine. Steven outdid himself with an enormous amount of pork. It was, without question, a feast. Flanked by two pork tenderloins wrapped in bacon, stuffed with figs, was a beautiful porchette with sage, garlic and rosemary. Not a sliver was left by the end of the night.

So much pork wrapped in pork, wrapped in pork. . .

To compliment the main dish we had an array of sides, Pumpkin soup topped with blue cheese crumbles and bacon, sweet potato pudding, green bean casserole, apple-squash bake, wild mushroom risotto, collard greens cooked to perfection, deviled eggs, biscuits, jams, an amazing dessert thing drizzled in caramel and more caramel and to-die-for fudge.

So much delicious food

Finally, there was plenty of wine – thanks to that being an admission cost and the beer was, as I am told, amazing. Tim brewed a perfect beer for the night, a “quality ESB and premium bitter.” I meant to try it, but it was gone before I had the chance. It was that good.

Thanks to all who attended our celebration of both fall and friendship and thanks to my fellow hosts that made the night delicious, joyful and the celebration it is intended to be.

Here’s to friends, fall and food.

P.S. – may the last of us always remember “Schmapples.”

Clyde

First, a disclaimer. I am not, nor have I ever been an impulsive shopper. I do not buy on a whim. I do not take a full day to peruse the malls and fling shopping bags about like Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman.

One week ago I was taking a break from photo editing to scroll through Craigslist. It’s an enjoyable past time of mine. You never know what random things you’re going to find, right? I mean, we’ve supplied our entire dining room with furnishings from Craigslist as well as several rugs about the house. Generally when I’m on a mission for something it’s very different than when I’m just amusing myself. When I’m just amusing myself I may happen upon the pets section. Seriously, it’s highly entertaining, “Ooh, puppies, odd, a bearded dragon….aw, fluffy kittens…. Purebred red/rust doberman 1yr old?” “Whaaaaaat?”

Long story short. Meet Zeus-Clyde.

(Originally named Zeus, but his personality is so “Clyde”)

It was us or the shelter. Really? How could we say no? And yes, yes that does make us a three-dog household. We’re tapping out now. No more pets. For those of you fellow dog/doberman owners, yes, the diva of a female is tolerating the goofy boy. He, of course, adores her and begs for her attention. She obliges on occasion. Llama, the social guy that he is, seems to be overjoyed to have a fellow boy to romp around with. We suspect he also enjoys herding the new guy about the yard and feeling like the big dog he envisions himself to be.

Lastly, I have to share the grand finale of our urban garden, drum roll please…….

SWEET POTATOES! Who knew? We can grow some pretty hearty sweet potatoes (Check out the one with the weird orb-thing!) We would have more than these three, but apparently the pups enjoy digging them up and eating them… note to self for next year – doggie fence around garden.

Wine Bottles & Wrought Iron

We’ve begun. We’ve begun the projects for the 4th Annual Harvest Party. It wasn’t the intention when we woke up… however, today is a glorious fall day, 67 degrees, partly cloudy, a gentle breeze and still early enough in the day to be productive without feeling exhausted.

Project Number One: The RailingWe’ve bribed my brother. He’s fresh out of college and below the poverty level. Perfect position for bribery. This beautiful new coat of paint (plus the scraping-the-rust-off process) for a futon. A nice one, of course… but a futon none-the-less.

Next up, the wine bottle border: Josh was inspired by an article in Ready Made Magazine about creating a wine bottle border. We’ve been collecting wine bottles and our friends have been donating them to us for a while now… probably close to three years. Oh, and before ye judge our drinking habits, it should be noted that one of our good friends is a wine rep and would save us bottles.

Lastly, my green-thumbed husband cleaned up the garden… you recall it’s last look… ridiculously out of control. It’s much more sightly now: We do still have sweet potatoes growing. Other than that, tomatoes and corn were all we ended up with. And by corn I really mean two cobs. But still, first timers… not too shabby.

Bronte and Llama have been hanging outside all day giving their two cents to the work being done:

Fingers crossed!

20110823-104100.jpg

Our fingers are still crossed for DIY Network’s Worst Kitchen in America Contest. According to the official contest rules, “the grand prize winner will be notified on a date in late August 2011…” So we’re still hoping!

In other updates… Our “pea” plant seems to be producing watermelon… (just envision us smacking our foreheads right about now).
